Psychology Major Fee
Beginning in autumn, 2009, all psychology majors will be assessed a $50 quarterly fee. The purpose of this fee is to enhance the undergraduate experience in our department. The fee will be used for a number of initiatives including
1. ESTABLISHMENT OF AN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH LAB: Beginning in autumn quarter, there will be a designated computer lab in the Psychology Building open only to psychology majors, from 8am-8pm, Monday through Friday. In addition to computers, students will have use of a printer and copy machine at a significantly reduced cost. A poster plotter will also be available for students to print a research poster at no cost. In addition to this, two rooms in the Psychology Building will be available strictly to undergraduate psychology students to reserve to collect data for research studies.
2. TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENTS. Each of the classrooms on the first and second floors of the Psychology Building will be installed with SMART Board interactive whiteboards. Televisions on the ground, first, and second floors of the Psychology Building will provide departmental information and updates.
3. TRAVEL FUNDING FOR MAJORS: In November, applications will be available for psychology majors to submit requests for conference travel funds and study abroad travel funds. Up to 50 students will receive awards of up to $300 to facilitate travel to conferences where they will present research. Up to 30 students will receive awards of $500 to support their OSU-affiliated study abroad program. In addition, the department will pay the entire cost of the Resident Director for students participating in the Psychology London Short-Term Study Abroad Program rather than this cost being shared among student participants.
4. CAREER PROGRAMMING: Our annual career programming will feature speakers from outside OSU with specific expertise in working with psychology students. We will also be expanding the services provided for students leading up to the annual Psychology Career, Internship, and Graduate School Fair.
5. OTHER ENHANCEMENTS: We are interested in your thoughts for future enhancements to the major. Our current plans include increasing our internship support for students, adding interactive kiosks in the lobby of the Psychology Building to access the web and make appointments, increasing programming to facilitate student-faculty interaction, and hiring additional advising and programming staff to better serve our majors. Please bring additional ideas to the attention of the undergraduate advising office on the first floor of the psychology building.
